The game has produced some terrific moments worth reading about in the newly released publication “A Centenary of Rugby League 1908-2008".
1967: NUDE MYTHS?
“The scandalous story of the ‘Man in the Bowler Hat’ hit like a bombshell at the end of the tour, as players packed their bags in France. English newspapers reported that the Kangaroos had left a ‘trail of damage’ at their base camp, the Ilkley Moore Hotel, and that one player had walked the streets of Ilkley in a tie, a bowler hat and nothing else. The tale was a sensation back in Australia. ‘NUDE SHOCKS ILKLEY’ shouted a headline in the Sun. In the years that followed the story became one of the game’s juiciest legends, with lock Johnny Raper rated chief suspect and Chook, in turn, having vast amounts of fun with the tale, appearing on television and at functions sporting a bowler hat.”
A Centenary of Rugby League by David Middleton and Ian Heads is published by Pan Macmillan Australia and is now on sale in most good leading books; RRP $75.00. - Read More, Here
