The draw for the first round of Rugby League's 2008 Carnegie Challenge
Cup will be staged on January 17 at leading community Rugby League club
Blackbrook (in St Helens).

At this stage of the competition 54 teams will go into the draw
following this weekend's Preliminary round which itself features four
ties.

Among the First Round entrants will be the Rugby League team from
competition's principal partner, Leeds Metropolitan University. The team
- which has a healthy pedigree in this tournament - have qualified via
their performances in the national Student Rugby League competitions.

Teams from the Army, the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy also line up
at this stage.

Scottish club Edinburgh Eagles and the Twickenham based club St Mary's
will also be involved in the draw.

The draw event takes place at Blackbrook ARLFC which was the junior club
of St Helens' trio Paul Wellens, James Roby and Paul Clough. All three
were members of the Saints side which lifted the famous trophy at the
new Wembley Stadium last August.

Commenting on the First Round draw, Rugby League Services Manager Niel
Wood said; "The Carnegie Challenge Cup provides community clubs with a
great opportunity to test themselves against opposition they would not
normally face.

"As the playing standards across all areas of the game continue to rise,
the draw is sure to provide us with many interesting clashes and I'm
sure all teams will be desperate to go as far as possible and test
themselves against professional opposition as the competition progresses
to the third and fourth rounds".

This season's Carnegie Challenge Cup Final takes place at Wembley
Stadium on Saturday 30th August 2008.
